In general, all kittens do best when they are with their mom, the best practice is always to wait to bring stray kittens to the shelter when they are 6-8 weeks old and able to eat solid food on their own. But, for the ones whose mom is not around to care for them and they need the shelter resources, we rely on our foster network to take care of them.
Fostering typically lasts anywhere from 2 weeks to 8 weeks depending how old the kitten(s) are. Generally they are in groups, but sometimes are single, and are just looking for a space to vacation away from the shelter so they can stay healthy until they are old enough to get spayed/neutered and made available for adoption. We ask that you bring them to the shelter for their vaccinations and contact us regarding any medical needs.
We also are always looking for reliable and caring foster families that are willing to help with cats or kittens who have special needs, such as socialization or recovering from injury or illness or in need of hospice care.
You will be supplied with a crate, carrier, litter box/scoop, toys, and blankets for the duration of their stay with you and food and litter to get you started.
If you are ready to open your home to some kittens or cats, please complete and submit the form below. You can follow up with a call to the shelter to see what available foster opportunities are available at this time. 207-474-6493
