Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Somerset Humane Society!   Volunteers play a vital role in taking care of the animals in our care.

We rely heavily on our volunteers for socialization of our animals, cleaning, feeding/watering, washing dishes, doing laundry, and helping with events, both onsite and offsite. If any of this sounds interesting to you, then please fill out and submit the volunteer application below.  

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accept volunteers under the age of 16 years old without adult supervision.  If you are under 16 years old, you must have a responsible adult with you at all times while volunteering.
Once your application is received and approved, the volunteer coordinator will contact you to set up your orientation and volunteer schedule.  This is primarily done through email.

Volunteer Application

If they are not a current, active volunteer, they will need to fill out an application as well. The Coach or Support Person must stay with their client at all times while volunteering.
**If you are under 18 years old, your parent or legal guardian must fill out the following fields and read and agree to all terms and conditions. ** 
Animal care and cleaning takes place 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Fast pace kennel cleaning is done between 8am-10am, then kitchen work/room restocking is done until noontime.  Generally in the afternoon, the shelter opens to the public for adoptions, and there are other tasks that can be completed then.
We ask all of our volunteers to do some small chores before they socialize with the animals.  
Duties and and responsibilities can include but are not limited to:
Cleaning and disinfecting of animal kennels, 
Kitchen duties, including laundry and dishes,
Daily re-stocking, 
Basic cleaning and disinfecting of all rooms which can include washing walls, sweeping and mopping floors, emptying trash and organizing.  
Sanitizing the dog yard,
Assisting with sorting donations, 
Lawn care and garden work in the summer, 
Shoveling and roof raking in the winter, 
Assisting and maintaining the food supply shed, 
Assisting with basic animal care.
Please note that the shelter is closed everyday from 12pm-1pm for lunch.  No volunteers are allowed in the building during that time.
For the purpose of obtaining permission from the Somerset Humane Society, 123 Middle Road, Skowhegan, Maine, (hereinafter referred to as "SHS"), to perform services for the shelter, I state that I have disclosed all physical and/or mental handicaps or impairments, which might adversely affect the performance of the activities, which I desire to undertake on behalf of SHS. I agree to serve without compensation as a volunteer worker for such period or periods and at such time or times as may be mutually agreed upon by SHS and myself. I understand my volunteer services will be performed at the SHS and at such other locations to which I may be assigned in the course of SHS activities. In doing so, I will act entirely on my own initiative; risk and responsibility within the discretion of SHS operating personnel. I am aware of the dangers which are inherent in the handling in the presence of animals and the hazards which are encountered in the course of the normal pursuit of life and living.
Now in consideration of the Somerset Humane Society's willingness to delegate to me assignments or work within the scope of SHS charitable purposes, subject to the revocation of such activity by me or by SHS at any time without notice, I make the following commitments:
1. I assume responsibility for all risk of loss, damage or injuries that may be suffered by me or to property owned by me or in my custody in the course of my activities on behalf of SHS or any of it's agents, directors, officers, servents, employees or any other volunteer workers, whether sustained or suffered at any premises under the control of SHS or at any other premises not under the control of SHS or when in route to or from all such places or premises by any means of travel including, but not limited to, (a) privately owned vehicles, (b) my own automobile or vehicles borrowed by me, (c) vehicles owned or controlled by SHS, in each case whether said vehicle is operated by myself or other persons, (d) public transportation. 
2. I hereby release, discharge and indemnify the Somerset Humane Society and it's agents,  directors, officers, servents, employees or any other volunteer workers of and from and in respect to any and all claims, actions and rights of causes of action, present or future, whether known, anticipated or unanticipated, on account of any personal injury, including death or in connection with, my performance of volunteer services at the place or places and in the performance of activities as are described in this agreement. 
3. I agree to engage in volunteer program activities with the Somerset Humane Society.  In the event of an emergency, I hereby give permission to the physician selected by SHS to hospitalize, secure proper care for, and to order injection and/or anesthesia and/or surgery for me.  I hereby agree that the Somerset Humane Society shall not be held responsible for any injury, accident and/or sickness to myself. 
The representative, conditions, and commitments contained in this instrument shall be binding upon my heirs, next-of-kin, and personal representative. 
By typing my name below, I acknowledge that I have read and agree to the information and terms stated above.
PHOTO CONSENT
I grant permission and give my consent to Somerset Humane Society for the use of any photograph(s) of myself, or my children, as identified below for presentation under any legal use, including posting on social media and the internet.
Images will be stored in a secure location and only authorized staff will have access to them.  They will be kept as long as they are relevant and after that time, destroyed or archived.
