The purpose of the Kennel Technician is to provide attentive care to the animals at our shelter at all times. Somerset Humane Society must maintain a clean and healthy environment for the animals and humans spending time in our building.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Daily cleaning of all areas of the shelter including grounds and outbuildings
  • Spot cleaning/sanitizing of animal and public areas hourly throughout the day
  • Feeding the animals including providing special diets as needed
  • Monitoring the health of the animals during morning cleaning and throughout the day with close attention to any health problems (medical or behavioral) and immediately reporting it to the supervisor/medical person on shift
  • Socializing and grooming the animals as needed including frequent nail trims
  • Walking, playing ball, basic training with the dogs as needed
  • Doing laundry, dishes, washing windows, cleaning and mopping public areas as needed throughout the day
  • Providing a healthy, clean, safe and pleasant environment for the animals and public
  • Providing a calm and caring attitude towards and in the presence of animals
  • Maintaining a friendly demeanor and providing good customer service to the public
  • Working cooperatively and in a genuinely supportive and pleasant manner with other staff members.
  • Filling in for other areas and performing other functions as needed
  • Restocking room supplies
  • Organizing incoming donations in outbuildings
  • Grounds maintenance (mowing and shoveling)

Specific Job Skills:

  1. Be able to learn assigned tasks quickly, be detail-oriented, and be able to follow instructions entirely
  2. Time management is a must
  3. Be able to deal tactfully and effectively with the public
  4. Learn how to control animals with patience and kindness
  5. Be able to lift up to 50 pounds, work both inside and outside in all weather conditions in a very physically demanding job, and be able to stand for long periods of time
  6. Must have the ability to work weekends, holidays and split shifts as required
  7. Be very dependable, with a reliable form of transportation
  8. Maturity, good judgment and a professional personal appearance
  9. Ability to read, write legibly, and understand the English language
  10. Be comfortable with and have the ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those who may exhibit medical and other problems as well as aggressive tendencies
  11. Successfully adapt to an ever changing and hectic environment
